"This data was the difference between being blind to now having some idea of what we needed to do. It showed us that there were opportunities we could take advantage of that would help us to see our way through this pandemic. It was the candle that we needed to follow."

About Pilgrim
Pilgrim Foodservice is a second-generation family business based in Lincolnshire, founded by Peter Bateman in 1979 and now led by his son Charles Bateman. They serve independent eateries with over 4,000 quality products across fresh produce, prepared vegetables, specialty, chilled, frozen and artisan butchery ranges, delivered by their fleet of multi-temperature vehicles.
The challenge
When COVID-19 hit in early 2020, there was an immediate impact on Pilgrim Foodservice as they supply to many businesses in the hospitality and education sector. With their orders having dropped instantly by 40% and continuing to decrease, they urgently needed to rebuild their supply chain.
They needed to ensure that people at home had quick and easy access to the essential items under increasing demand during lockdown.
The solution
Pilgrim Foodservice built a new analytic application that identified an opportunity to supply essentials to the people who needed them. They decided to set up on and off-site pop-up shops, from which they sold directly to the public and smaller retail chains.
This new revenue stream allowed them to reduce their stock levels, manage their perishable products and meet the demands of the public.
The results
The analytics helped predict customer demand in uncertain times and focused stock management, bolstering cash flow and improving customer service. Pilgrim opened up a new business-to-consumer revenue stream through pop-up shops.
User-friendly, interactive dashboards gave the business access to relevant information fast, allowing them to make quick decisions during the crisis.
"Pilgrim Foodservice faced every wholesaler's nightmare during COVID - losing 40% of orders overnight. Helping them spot the B2C opportunity through data analytics and pivot to pop-up shops so quickly was fantastic. It shows how the right insights can turn a crisis into a new revenue stream."
