Microsoft Fabric: Your end-to-end data platform
Bring data integration, engineering, warehousing, real-time analytics, data science and Power BI together in one SaaS platform on Azure.
Trusted by 250+ UK organisations, Ometis pairs deep Microsoft and Qlik experience with a vendor-agnostic approach to design Fabric architectures that actually work in complex, real-world data environments.
What is Microsoft Fabric?
Microsoft Fabric is a SaaS data platform from Microsoft that consolidates data integration, lakehouse, data warehousing, real-time analytics, data science and Power BI into a single experience on Azure.
What Fabric includes
✅ Single, OneLake-based storage layer for structured and unstructured data across all workloads.
✅ Built-in experiences for data engineering, warehousing, data science and BI with shared governance and security.
✅ Native integration with Microsoft 365, Power BI and Azure services for identity, collaboration and AI.
✅ Capacity-based pricing with elastic scaling to match changing demand.
✅ Strong roadmap backed by Microsoft's cloud and AI investments.
These capabilities allow organisations to simplify fragmented data stacks, shorten time-to-insight and make better use of existing Microsoft skills and licences.

When to use Microsoft Fabric:
Fabric makes sense when you need to solve problems such as:
1. Disconnected Azure and on-premises data services leading to slow, manual reporting and multiple versions of the truth.
2. Power BI reports built on fragile data flows or siloed data marts that are difficult to govern or scale.
4. Complex pipelines spanning Azure Data Factory, Synapse and Databricks that are expensive to maintain and hard to document.
Examples of our customer Qlik projects
Saved 416 hours annually by replacing 91 Excel pivots with 30 Qlik reports. Automated reporting saved additional 28 days per year with zero crashes.
Built a Qlik application with 9 million records in one month. Deployed to 100+ users with just 2 hours training.
Using Qlik and Inphinity for planning and reporting with version control.
Cut spreadsheet time by 50% thanks to Qlik. Finance team now focuses on insights instead of data collection.
Using Qlik for integration and planning workflows.
Microsoft Fabric vs Snowflake
| Microsoft Fabric | Snowflake | |
| Core focus | Complete data platform (integration, lakehouse, warehouse, real-time, BI) on Azure. | Cloud data warehouse with strong separation of storage and compute across multiple clouds. |
| Ecosystem fit | Best fit for organisations standardising on Azure, Power BI and Microsoft 365. |
Best fit where multi-cloud flexibility and tool-agnostic warehousing are priorities. |
| BI & semantics | Power BI can be included with certain Fabric subscriptions, with semantic models and business-friendly experiences built into the platform. | Integrates well with many BI tools but does not include a native BI front-end. |
| Real-time & streaming | Real-Time Analytics and Real-Time Intelligence are part of the same platform. | Can support streaming via external services and features but is primarily batch/near real-time. |
| AI & ML | Integrated with Microsoft AI services and Copilot capabilities across workloads. | Snowflake embeds native AI and ML with Snowflake Cortex, Snowpark ML, and integrated AI agents for building, deploying, and scaling models directly on governed data. |
| Governance | Central governance, security and lineage across all Fabric workloads via OneLake. | Strong governance at the warehouse level, with broader data governance managed through additional tools. |

How is Microsoft Fabric priced?
Fabric uses capacity-based pricing where you purchase Fabric capacity (F-SKUs measured in Capacity Units) and workloads consume that shared capacity. You can buy pay-as-you-go or as one- or three-year reserved commitments.
Is Fabric suitable for smaller organisations?
Smaller organisations already using Power BI and Microsoft 365 can benefit from Fabric's single platform approach. For very small teams with simple reporting needs, a lighter Power BI setup may be more cost-effective until complexity grows.
Can Fabric work alongside existing Snowflake or Qlik investments?
Yes. Fabric includes connectors and mirroring for Snowflake, and tools like Qlik can continue consuming data while you adopt Fabric for specific use cases. The key is treating them as parts of a governed data estate rather than isolated silos.
Do we need to move all our data into OneLake to use Fabric?
No. OneLake can reference data in other locations through shortcuts and mirroring, so you can work with data in existing storage systems without physically copying it into Fabric.
Why work with a partner like Ometis for Fabric?
A specialist partner accelerates your assessment, architecture design and adoption planning. At Ometis, we bring experience across 250+ data clients and multiple platforms to help you identify realistic starting points, design a phased roadmap and avoid common pitfalls in capacity planning, governance and cost. We'd love to work with you.
Qlik FAQ
How long does implementation take?
It varies significantly based on complexity and data sources. We provide realistic timelines during initial assessment. PizzaExpress completed their cloud migration in under 4 weeks. Anglia Ruskin built and deployed their application in one month.
How much does Qlik cost?
Pricing varies by deployment type (cloud vs on-premise), products used (analytics, integration, AI), and user count. We provide transparent cost estimates including implementation during your consultation call.
Can we migrate from Power BI or Tableau?
Yes. We've done dozens. Typical migration: 2-4 months including training and support.
Does Qlik work with Snowflake or Databricks?
Yes. Qlik sits on top and adds analytics and business user access. Many customers use both, and we can support with all of them.
Do we need technical skills?
Business users build dashboards with drag-and-drop. Data integration needs technical skills. We offer training no matter who uses Qlik.
What systems does Qlik connect to?
Qlik integrates with 100+ sources including SQL Server, Oracle, MySQL, PostgreSQL, Snowflake, BigQuery, Redshift, Salesforce, Dynamics 365, SAP, Kafka, Kinesis, S3, Azure Blob Storage, and most major databases. Supports real-time change data capture, batch and streaming ingestion, REST APIs, and file formats including JSON, XML, CSV, and Parquet. Works across AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud for hybrid and multi-cloud deployments.
How does Qlik's associative engine work?
The associative engine loads your data into memory and calculates all relationships instantly. Click on any value and everything related updates. No pre-defined queries. You can explore in any direction without hitting dead ends.
